Quick Read...
Becuase this book was free I can't complain too much. The read was easy and fast, definately a "short story"...I read it throughout a day. The religious overtones aren't over bearing and neither is the romance, although the romance seemingly took forever to start up! Overall a good book.
Surprisingly great read,
I normally don't read this sort of novel! This one was a real surprise. The Christian angle was not over played. The romance was not over done! There was no blatant sex. What there was was a well written mystery with reasonable character development. It is obvious to an avid reader that we will see more of the characters as the author continues their story line in future books!

As a disabled person on a fixed income I will allocate some of my limited funds to buy this author in the future!
Easy, light mystery
This novel was an easy, light read for times when you don't really want a lot of action, suspense, or thought-provoking moments. There were enough clues to keep the reader guessing, and the plot moved along at a good pace so I never got bored. I would say that I guessed half of the ending as far as the "who dunnit" aspect without really trying, but there was still a surprising twist that I didn't foresee. The Amish undertones are very subtle--this certainly isn't a book that will teach you a lot about the fascinating people or their way of life. The Christian aspect is present, but is much lighter than I've found in other novels labeled "Christian Fiction". It is unmistakeable, however, so if you find that distracting this is not the book for you.

And as a Christian novel the romance is very chaste. It was a quick read and pretty much delivered what I'd expected given the genre. If it is still available as a freebie for Kindle owners I'd rec. it if your tastes are similar.
Hide in Plain Sight - What a Great Start
I thought this book was great. The characters were well represented throughout. The romance was there in a cute subtle way. I've already purchased the remaining books in this series and can't wait to get started.Hide in Plain Sight (Three Sisters Inn, Book 1)
Nothing Special
This book was okay, but nothing special. I didn't particularly care about the characters and felt the plot left a lot to be desired. I had the mystery figured out early on.

Description

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

The Book Thief: A Teen's Perspective
I've been reading a lot of the reviews for this book and I've noticed a recurring theme with most of them. Some have been saying that this is not a book that teens would enjoy, but I'm here to let you know that that is nowhere near the truth. Now I will admit that I am an old teenager (19 years old) and that I mostly read mangas (Japanese comics) but although I still love Japanese comics, I'm looking for more novels to read, because I've miss them so much from my days as an avid reader. The Book Thief is a beautiful work of art amidst the vampire phase spurred by Meyer's Twilight series *gags* that I can't seem to escape in bookstores (seriously there's vampire crap EVERYWHERE, and quite frankly I'm sick of looking at it), Marcus Zusak has fired up my desire to read regular books. I'm now constantly on the look-out for more and more great novels like this one and I will be reading more of Zusak's work. I highly suggest any adults out there with teens to let them have a go at this book.
best read in a long time
There have been so many good reviews of this book. Just wanted to add mine as I loved this book. Can't really understand the young reader tag tho?? A great story but the writing style is the thing that grabs you. Should be used in any writing class as an example of perfection.
Unique, Enchanting, Heart-Breaking: A Modern Classic
I usually start my book reviews by writing a story overview to give you a glimpse of what the book is about. And I could do that for this book too ...

"This is the story novel of a 9-year-old girl named Liesel Meminger who lives with her adoptive parents in World War II Germany in the working-class town of Molching. Given up by her mother to protect her safety, Liesel loses her younger brother on the train ride to Molching. (At his burial, she steals her first book, The Grave Diggers Handbook.) As she grows up on Himmel Street, we get to know Liesel and her accordion-playing adoptive father Hans Hubermann; her stern (but secretly loving) adoptive mother Rosa; her best friend Rudy; the depressed but kind Mayor's Wife (who passively encourages and abets Liesel's continuing book theft); and the sad but strong Jewish refugee Max (who is hidden in the Hubermann's basement). Set against the backdrop of World War II, we experience the war from Liesel's point of view--from forced participation in the Hitler Youth, to the stress of sheltering a Jew in your basement, to the importance of seeming to support the Nazis and Hitler when you're doing everything you can to subvert their atrocities while not being noticed."

...but I don't really want to do that. Why? Because giving a summary of this book doesn't convey to you what makes this book so incredibly powerful, amazing, gripping and poetic. It makes the book seem somewhat ordinary when it is anything but. For this is an extraordinary book.

What makes it so extraordinary? The narrator. Our narrator, you see, is Death. (Yes ... Death. Like the Grim Reaper.) And, as you might expect, Death doesn't come at a story in the same way as you or I.

EXCERPT: I could introduce myself properly, but it's not really necessary. You will know me well enough and soon enough, depending on a diverse range of variables. It suffices to say that at some point in time, I will be standing over you, as genially as possible. Your soul will be in my arms. A color will be perched on my shoulder. I will carry you gently away.

Death is tired. Death needs a distraction. A vacation. Which is why he notices colors. To Death, Rudy isn't just a boy. He is the lemon-haired boy. Hans Hubermann isn't just a man. He is the silver-eyed man (whose eyes begin to rust at his death). But Death notices Liesel ... and something about her catches his notice. As Death says:

EXCERPT: It's the story of one of those perpetual survivors--an expert at being left behind. It's just a small story really, about, among other things:

* A girl
* Some words
* An accordionist
* Some fanatical Germans
* A Jewish fist fighter
* And quite a lot of thievery

I saw the book thief three times.

From the very first page until the very last, I was completely enchanted by this book. I loved Death's narration ... his bolded, centered asides, his sly sense of humor, his use of imagery and colors, his way of listing the events in the upcoming chapters, his advice for meeting him, the gentle way he holds a soul in his arms. For me, Zusak's choice of narrator and the way he tells the story elevates this book from "another World War II novel" to a shimmering, dazzling prism of light that reflects our humanness back to us.

If you can't tell already, I loved this book. Loved it. When you read a lot of books, you're always hoping for one that will surprise you, tell you a story in a unique way, or open your eyes to what a writer can do with words. For me, The Book Thief was one of those books. Upon starting it, I immediately regretted that I hadn't read it sooner. What if Death had come for me before I got to read it? Then it became a book that I didn't want to end. Although it is 576 pages, I found something to love and linger over on each page. And although I'm not a person who likes to reread books, I know I will revisit this one again.

So, if you haven't read it yet, don't delay. It is a wondrous book--brimming with love and dazzling in its inventiveness and words. Perfection.

A Brief Aside: For some reason, this book is always classified as a Young Adult novel, which I feel might turn off some readers. Do not let this label fool you into thinking there is anything simplistic about this book. If this is YA book, then it is the pinnacle of the genre. In my mind, I don't see it needing to be labeled as such, and I fear that such a label might keep some readers away from it. Don't make that mistake!
Something different
The story is narrated by Death, who is out collecting souls. Mainly it concerns Liesel Meminger and the people around her - in particular her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, her particular friend, Rudy Steiner, and a Jew in hiding, Max Vandenburg. The story starts in 1939 when 9-year-old Liesel (not quite ten) arrives on Himmel Street in Molching, a town on the outskirts of Munich. It continues through the war years to 1943, as people struggle to survive, men from the town are sent to the Eastern Front in Russia, and Death strips away people around Liesel. Along he way Liesel steals books and learns to read and write. It skips forward with an Epilogue to the end of the war in 1945, and ends with Liesel in Australia, the home country of the author.

Along the way you will get a good picture of life in a small town in Nazi Germany during the war.
Wonderful Read for All
This book is a must read for ages 13 to 100. The perspective of death as the narrator, and the innocence and bravery of Leisel, the main character, will leave lasting memories of joy in spite of the destruction in the small Nazi-German village. The neighbor boy, Rudy, will burn a hole in your heart with his bravery and spirit...the characters will live on in your heart. Read it and rejoice in the great human spirit that thrives where there is love.

I think of the images and events, and they fill my soul. Enjoy, and be sure to watch the video of Markus Zusak giving a book talk in Australia. The part he tells about his family, when they were painting houses, and it was time to break the eggs for lunch. Well worth the google search. (It illustrates Zusak's rich writing style and his sense of humor).

Damsel in Distress, Lies, God's Protection
Ah, another good read Ms. Alexander. This damsel in distress reminds me of Tess of the d'Urbervilles, to begin with; Molly's been used......and discarded.....then cast out under duress and finds herself getting off a train in the Colorado Territory. I like the inner conflict of self preservation and following God's will and ways put into story form. We all have it. Romans 7:19 says, 'For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing.' She has one moment of poor judgment and then tells one lie...that turns into another and the conflict continues with guilt, self loathing, and remorse added to the mix. All the while praying for God to get her out of the mess with no wrinkles in her dress to boot!

As we all do, she prays about it, sees the natural consequences and concludes that it's all punishment from God. But Molly is a tough cookie who really deep down knows her God; the circumstances feel bigger than Him. The fun part of this book is seeing just how God manages to use each indiscretion, mistake, and lie to His good. Her dress still manages to get wrinkled though. ;0)

I can't wait for my next installment Tamera! Within My Heart is due out in September, I believe.

5 Stars for Story Depth- the secondary and tertiary dramas going on are great!

4 Stars for the Temperature Setting- Boy, it was warm in those mountains! Lots of goosebumps and butterflies as well as nail biting here.

4 Stars for Celestial Inspiration- I'm reminded yet again, that even though I keep stirring up my own pot, God knows how to cook this stew much better than me. It's His recipe and I'm only one of the ingredients.

Interesting Post Civil War Novel
This book takes place in Colorado about 10 years after the Civil War. It shows some of the ramifications of that war.

IN addition it has a Heroine who is an independent, career-minded woman. Not many Historicals write about women like that. Also this book has a virgin Hero. I can count on one hand the number of books with those I have read.

The story flowed smoothly and I found the secondary character of Josiah to be delightful. The only negative I have is in the ending which I thought was a tad over the top and unrealistic. I seriously doubt that that ending would have happened in real life.
Great book
I almost deleted this off my Kindle after the first chapter, but, saw all the good reviews and kept reading. I am so so glad I did. I did not want to put it down. This book has so much in it. Romance, family issues, racial issues, ignorance, how we are all linked in some way and it hits the point that we are all the same dealing with the same everday issues and how we need to handle them together. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Photography Fanatic loved it!
I loved this book. I am an avid amateur photographer and loved the way Tamera worked in the details about photography in its earlier years. The characters were rich with well thought out back stories. Even though we pick up in the middle of the characters lives, by the end of the book you feel as if you've been friends for years. The descriptions of the landscape are remarkable. I was pretty sure I was breathing that cool mountain air, even though my living room is in Arizona!
Not My Favorite By Tamera Alexander
Although I rated this book with only 3 stars, I really don't think it had anything to do with Tamera Alexander's writing or the story itself. I enjoyed the main plot and the way the other details of the sub plots were woven into the story. I especially enjoyed Josiah's character. I think I just had a hard time connecting with the heroine which I've found lately either makes or breaks a book for me. Elizabeth was a likeable personality but I didn't feel that she put God first in her life. She claimed to want to follow God but then lied to everyone to manipulate her life into what she wanted rather than what God wanted for her. She would then justify her actions and question why God wasn't blessing her efforts to become the photographer she felt He wanted her to be. I know we all deal with putting God first in our lives on a daily basis but I never really saw her repent and ask for forgiveness from those she lied to and manipulated. I think that may have made me feel like she had changed for the better and learned from her mistakes by the end of the book.

Sadly, I had to make myself push to the end of this one but it won't stop me from reading Tamera Alexander's other books. I would highly recommend her Fountain Creek Chronicles series.

anatomy coloring book
learning about the human body can be quite a challenge for someone - i know i struggled to understand how bits fit together as i am a visual person, so finding this book which educates me but helps me remember by coloring in body parts has soooooooooooooooo helped me with my studies and i am more comfortable when massaging customers and they ask me questions
Book review
This is a very good book for helping people that are visual learners like I am. Hope others find this as helpful as I have. Great illustrations.
Anatomy coloring book
First off, amazon is selling this at a very good price. I got ripped at my campus bookstore for this. I wish I'd waited to get this here. This is just something I picked up as a supplement to my A&P class. It looks very detailed and I can't wait to start coloring it. It is a very big book! There is a lot of information in here.
Very Helpful
This book really helped me to learn my anatomy by the repetition and order of coloring each section of the body.
useful for nursing school
I got this book as a study aid to prepare for anatomy & physiology classes that are required prerequisites for the nursing program I plan to apply to. This book, along with its companion, Physiology Coloring Book, is really very helpful. The plates are beautifully drawn, the instructions for coloring are clear and concise, and the accompanying text provides a useful summary of the anatomical or physiological feature being shown. The information is up to date and appears to have few errors although there is, very occasionally, a typo. The tactile and visual experience of coloring is really good to help retain and understand the information being conveyed. It is much more effective than reading and re-reading text, or staring at diagrams and trying to memorize everything that's labeled. Although I have two college degrees, both are in liberal arts and I finished them in the late 1990s, so I have limited exposure to hard science classes at the college level. By going through these two books on my own, I feel much better prepared for the anatomy & physiology class I'll be starting this fall. I would recommend them to anyone who feels a need for a study aid, wants to prepare for an anatomy or physiology class, or is just interested in how the human body works.

Totally Amazing!!
I was a little hesitant to begin reading this book...however in the end I was completely hooked! The story was compelling and kept you enthralled from beginning to end. I immediately purchased the rest of the series and was absolutely glued to my Kindle!! Thanks to the author and I thank Amazon for putting this book out there for anyone to grab up!
Amazing!
Honestly, this book was AMAZING. I ended up reading the entire series. Each book got better than the last.

almost... but just misses
- liked the world development (G.R.R. Martin-esque)
- liked the characters
- allegory of christianity was full, vibrant, consistent, deep and fair

caveats:
- smoked all the story/plot ammunition at once.
- where will sequels go now that main character converted?
- strength of Christian allegory necessarily high due to... well.. could it be otherwise?

recommendations:
- like the movie 'Fireproof'? you'll like this.
- movie 'Fireproof' to be 'too preachy'? you may still like this.
- interested in what christianity is about? this is a good introductory allegory.
- don't like books centered on protestant thought? possibly wont like this.

** spoiler **
I know the author had a purpose behind the death of the love interest, but it really took too much out of the book for me. I liked the main character.. I wanted him to have both his conversion *and* a life together with the love interest. Both can be done. The lesson can be pushed through other characters. What if she was pregnant with his child? Why couldn't the have the joy of being formally married?
I don't have a problem with the point (ie, He works in mysterious ways, and those of the faith live on in heaven after death), but I think making the point in this way (which was really at the author's discretion) really distracted me.
Enthralling!
As a fan of fantasy books, which this is, I was happy to find that I not only found the book engaging but a place I couldn't wait to visit again when I was done. The main character of Abramm was so well written that you start out questioning how in any world this character could carry a book much less a series but by the end you are loyal to him and want him to triumph.
I could see the scenery and knew the charcters. I great read about a young man struggling to come to grips with no only his reality changing but the whole worlds. Worth every penny! I would even have paid for this one.
Gripping
I read all the instalments of this series in one week. I was gripped throughout by a thrilling plot, sympathetic well-drawn characters and the magic. Most enjoyable!

Customer Reviews

Very entertaining to me
I don't know the reason people are stating this book is predictable, boring, etc. I did not read all of the reviews but in my opinion, this is a great book. I just hate it ended so soon and wished there was a sequel or series. I found it very entertaining and it had me hooked from the first chapter. I love historical romances as they always remind me of the "Little House on the Prairie" shows. Being a believer in God myself, I look for those books with biblical/Godly themes. I absolutely loved (& still love) to watch those. The spiritual/religious overtones in this book are not heavy at all. It's basically the same overtones as the Little House on the Prairie or the Waltons. the author is not forcing anyone to believe a certain way. It's just the way one character in the book was raised to believe. Everyone has a religion even atheists/agnostics whether they admit it or not. The atheists/agnostics believe in themselves and make themselves their 'God'(which is a religion) I wouldn't think they would have a problem with this book unless they don't have tolerance for those who choose to believe in God. Which if you're offended by the mere mention of God or the Bible, then by all means don't read this book. I read non-religious books as well as religious. It is a very light read in my opinion which is what I like late at night. May have been predictable but most books I read are predictable as face it, it's very hard to come up with a story line no one else has done before. Just look at the movies and how many re-makes are being made instead of original movies.

If this one stays free, give it a try, you just might find it's not as bad as some reviewers make it out to be.
Very Good Read
This was the first Kindle book that I read, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, especially since it was free.
I really enjoyed this!
I know this is brief, but wanted to say that this was enjoyable book. Yes, it may be predictable, but I have not found any in this genre that are not. This was a pleasant story with old time family values and a safe read for a teenager. Faith is demonstrated through the book, but it is not shoved down your throat,as some may not like. Worth the price and worth the read!
"Can I pile on the guilt, with a hefty side of pity, please?"
Ok, as far as a summary goes, Noelle Kramer and Thad McKaslin were young sweethearts, she wealthy and him...not so much. Noelle's father manipulates Thad's love of his family in order to keep them apart, forcing Thad to ride off and abandoned a still-smitten Noelle. Years later, Thad returns to his hometown to find that Noelle's parents have died tragically and she is blind. Enter both guilt and remorse. The characters spend most of the book feeling sorry for themselves and for each other. There's little dialogue between the pair to indicate that their romance could be realistically rekindled, and if you are actually looking for any hanky panky, this IS a Christian-based book, so that's a no go. I've read Christian fiction before, and enjoyed it (Francine Rivers is fantastic!), but this book was not especially inspiring and was, instead, totally boring. I feel like I wasted my time on this dud.
It was a Kindle Freebie
It wasn't horrible and it wasn't great. It was an easy book to read and predictable but I still enjoyed it. The repetitiveness was a little too much for me and as others have said, the "guilt" was overdone but all in all it wasn't a bad little story.

My thanks to the author for offering it up as a free Kindle book.
