Description

ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS presents the full spectrum Adams' greatest work in a single volume for the first time, offering an entirely new perspective on his monumental career..
The photographs are arranged chronologically into five major periods in order to convey Adams' development as an artist-from his first photographs made in Yosemite and the High Sierra in 1916 to his work in the National Parks in the 1940s up to his last important photographs from the 1960s. An introduction and brief essays on selected images provide information about Adams' life, document the evolution of his technique, and give voice to his artistic vision.
Few artists of any era can claim to have produced four hundred images of lasting beauty and significance. It is a testament to Adams' vision and a lifetime of hard work that a book of this scale can be justified. ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS is a must-have reference and gift book for anyone who appreciates photography and the allure of the natural world.

Excellent collection
I had the opportunity to flip through this book in a book store before I bought it on Amazon.
A few people have stated they dislike the size of the book and would have preferred a more 'standard' size But huge coffee-table books can be awkward or take up the whole table. I think this books size works perfectly for it's purpose and I'd rather have more of Ansel Adams images in one book then go out and buy six or seven books just to have the same photos.

Excellent book!!
Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs
Excellent book. However, Brassai: Paris by Night was shipped along with Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs .
The Ansel Adams book was completely encased in plastic wrap but the book Paris by Night was not. They were shipped together in a cardboard box and left on my front stoop "in the snow". The bottom of the box was sitting in snow. It became saturated and Brassai: Paris by Night, because it wasn't encased in plastic, became wet and damaged. Lesson to learn, wrap the books in plastic when shipping.
Ansel Adams Book
This is a great book, especially the explainations in the back. I will use this in developing my style for B&W images.
Simply Stunning
Any Ansel Adams fans should have this book. It was a gift for my dad and he loved it. Ansel Adams was a truly talented photographer.

This hard-back book is a must-have. The pictures are of stunning quality and clarity, and the subject range is diverse.

It would make a great coffee table book as its beauty would invite all who see it.
Amazing
The book was in PERFECT condition, delivered before the date, and it is going to be so amazing to see my mom's expression when I give her this book!

Description

The Camera, together with The Negative and The Print, comprise The Ansel Adams Photography Series, a legendary triad of books about photographic technique that has become the most influential "how-to"series on photography ever written. The first edition of this series was completed in the 1950s. Adams completely revised and updated it just a few years before his death, making it his last word on the technical mastery of his medium. Three generations of photographers have learned how to approach the artistic possibilities of their art form through this seminal series. Now available in paperback, it remains as vital today as when it was first published.

The Camera covers 35 mm, medium format, and large-format view cameras and offers detailed advice on camera components such as lenses, shutters, and light meters. Adams' concepts of "visualization" and "image management" are the philosophical cornerstones of the book. Extensively illustrated with photographs by Adams as well as instructive line drawings, this classic manual belongs on every serious photographer's bookshelf

The best photography books on the market!!
This is the first book in Ansel Adams photography series. I really cant stress enough the importance of reading all 3 of these books and reading them in their proper order. Ansel talks about a lot of techniques and many of these techniques build upon previous knowledge and previous techniques. If your serious enough about photography to have an interest in these books then you should want to do it right and doing it right is buying all 3 books and reading them in order.

I have been seeing a lot of reviews lately for these books that talk about going elsewhere if your a digital photographer and I couldn't disagree more. These books are the best books on the market in regards to teaching you photographic theory and putting that theory into usable form. Do these books focus on film, yes but the skils and theories that these books teach are easily transferred over to digital. IMO the photographers coming up today in the digital will not be nearly as skilled as the photographers who came up using film.

I have also come across a lot of reviews that talk about how the final image or print is the only thing that matters. In other words how you get there doesn't matter. I honestly feel sorry for these people. The process for me is 75% of what I love about photography. You take away those processes and photography becomes an empty shell. This is like telling model builders that the final model is all that matters. They will of course disagree as well as building the model is what makes the hobby so rewarding. Not just staring at the finished model. How you get to that final print in photography is just as important if not more important in my book. I am a large format photographer and to me the process of setting up my camera, selecting the right lens, metering for the proper exposure, going under the dark cloth and composing the picture, shooting the film, going back to the darkroom and developing the negatives and finally printing the negatives....this is what I love about photography. Shooting with a digital camera, using photoshop and printing on a digital printer doesn't even begin to compare. Yes you can still make great pictures with digital but the process itself is empty. There is just no comparing the 2 and because of this fact there will always be purists out there who shoot film and who understand the real magic of photography. For those out there that want to take this path, these are the books for you.

The bottom line is you will be a completely different photographer after you finish this series. It will take you awhile to finsih them and there are parts that you will re-read multiple times but when you are done, you will be far more skilled than you are now.

The first book, The camera obviously starts from the beginning and teaches you the basics of shooting with cameras. I wont even bother going into everything else as these books are so deep that even trying to sum them up in a review is pointless. The titles of the books are self explanatory. The first book deals with the camera, the 2nd book deals with the negative and the 3rd book deals with the print. Its divided up exactly as it should be as these really are the 3 vital components to photography.

If you are only interested in digital and all you care about is the final image then these books are not for you. Go buy a digital camera book, a photoshop book and a digital printing book. If however you are interested in photography as a whole and want to learn the skills that will make you a master, regardless of whether you shoot strictly film or digital, then look no further as these are hands down the best books on the market.

Go up to anyone who is serious about any particular hobby, regardless of what hobby it is, and ask them if the final product is the most important aspect to the hobby and you will get a resounding NO the vast majority of the time. Its the processes that get you to the final product that make a hobby so rewarding. You take away those processes and it just becomes empty.

The processes of film based photography are truly magical and when you make an amazing print from those processes, its far more rewarding than shooting a great digital picture. With the price of film based equipment crashing like the 1940's stock market, now is a perfect time to find out just how rewarding film can be. These books are the perfect place to start.

A Must Read for Film Camera Enthusiasts
This is a great book for anyone interested in enhancing their knowledge about film photography. I'd recommend it for anyone interested in purchasing and using a film camera. Just as the title suggests, this book is about the camera itself. There's a useful chapter on lenses that will help you decide which type of lens to buy for your shooting needs. Plus there's a good chapter on image management: how to compose shots to create visually interesting photographs.

I've read all three books in this series, and while they do lean on the technical side I still consider them essential references for film camera enthusiasts.
advanced photographic literature
This is the book to get if you're interested in understanding camera equipment (besides digital). Rangefinders, twin lens, large format, lenses, mechanics, etc., this book covers it. I'm still trying to get through the other two books in this series, "The negative", and "the print". They are far beyond my needs at the moment, but still interesting.
great book for liquid photography
This is the best book i have read. It has given me more information then i could have hoped for. A must read for any film photographer who want to know more about cameras.
Camera Book Review
While the writer is no longer with us, the book on cameras is a great find for anyone interested in 35mm photography.

Ansel Adams 2010 Wall Calendar
The Ansel Adams 2010 Wall Calendar was gone from the stores before I could pick up a copy this year, but fortunately it was available from this Amazon vendor, who shipped it promptly as promised. I was very pleased with this purchase.
"Pretty good" calendar
The calendar is in black and white which upset me at first because I thought it was going to be in color!!!

However, after putting it up on my light blue wall, I love it.

The only con is there are mostly California pictures in here which could be boring for some.
Incredible photos
This is our third Ansel Adams calendar and we love it. The photographs are breathtaking and we look forward to each new month!
Favorite Calendar
I like variety in my life but I always use this same calendar because it's so beautiful.
ordered 2010 calendar month ago - STILL NOT DELIVERED!!! SHODDY SHODDY SERVICE
Hi there,
I ordered a 2010 wall calendar from A1Books on Jan. 15. It's a month later, and the calendar is still not here. I find this to be appalling service. I've ordered a range exhaust hood, weighing approx. 100 pounds (from another company, obviously) that was delivered in a week. A calendar, all five ounces of it, still not here after a MONTH??!!!
Do yourselves a favour, and never order from A1Books.

The best photography books on the market!!
This is the third and final book in Ansel Adams photography series. I really cant stress enough the importance of reading all 3 of these books and reading them in their proper order. Ansel talks about a lot of techniques and many of these techniques build upon previous knowledge. If your serious enough about photography to have an interest in these books then you should want to do it right and doing it right is buying all 3 books and reading them in order.

Its important to note that these books mainly deals with black and white and rightfully so. Ansel's passion was Black and White and it would have been a huge mistake to have included a serious teaching of color into these books. If you are interested in color I recommend buying a separate book that specializes in color and to read it after you have finished these 3 books.

I wont bother going into much detail in regards to what this book teaches. That would take too much time and it would make this review way too long. Ill simply say that this book will put you on the road to becoming a master printer. As you most likely already know Ansel is one of the best black and white printers in the history of photography, in fact most people would credit him as being not one of the best but THE Best printer ever. His prints are magical and there is a reason for this. He was absolutely obsessed with quality and his skills in the darkroom were amazing. This book teaches you the techniques that made Ansel Adams one of the best printers ever to pick up a camera.

The bottom line - This is hands down the best 3 book series on photography ever made. If you are serious about photography and want to learn how to master shooting and printing in black and white then look no further. By the time you get finished with this series you will be a completely different photographer and will have a much better understanding of the skills required to become a master. With that being said if your a beginner you might want to think about starting with something a little less demanding. These books are a bit much for beginners.

5 stars and then some.
A Masterwork, But for an Earlier Age
That Adams' "The Print" is a landmark in photographic processing instruction is indisputable.

But while the visual objectives that Adams illustrates are as valid today as ever the bulk of this book is strictly for film printers. Digital photographers will go very hungry looking for any genuinely practical and useful tips here. For them, I recommend looking at the several excellent books on digital b&w printing that are available today. The best embody precisely the same visual objectives but present the solutions in terms of contemporary digital tools and techniques.
Beautiful
If you long for the days when photography, real photography, was black and white on film, then you will love this book. Of commercial necessity it has been years since I maintained my own darkroom and printed my own prints . . but how I miss the magic! This book brings it all back and in so doing opens some new creative channels in my mind as to how to get beautiful prints in the digital age. If you're a purist, you will love this book. If you are a pragmatist you will find ways to correlate traditional methods to digital processing and printing (even though the book does not address the topic of digital at all.) If you are serious about b/w get this book then work with your own shots and in your own workflow until you can emulate the look of this master.
with great knowledge comes great responsibility
Ansel Adams is the master of photography, black and white, but still photographic principles and concepts have been throughly tried and tested by him and he teaches you so much in his series starting with "The Camera" and ending up with this book which focuses more on the final piece. The 2nd book in the series is also so very crucial because it outlines and describes his "Zone System" in great detail. A must have for any avid photographer and a great shelf reference for any professional. Now go out and shoot.. waste some film for crying out loud and get some awesome shots :)
A great reference book for almost any photographer
In this third part of Adams' technical writings, you'll find a guide to go from what a camera recorded (it talks about a negative, but can be well applied to a digital raw file) to a fine print delivering "what you saw and felt" to the viewer.

Even if it applies to B&W, I find that much of the content can be applied to color work if you think a bit more about it - mostly now, in the digital age with separated luminance and chrominance controls.

You'll also read some good ol' kitchen recipes about developers and toning... These will be less and less useful, but can bring back the smell of the darkroom to your memory ;o)... And quite often, the principle that based the recipe can be applied to another media.

A reference, whether shooting film, digital or glass plates (and of invaluable interest for the two former).

The best photography books on the market!!
This is the 2nd book in Ansel Adams photography series.

The negative is imo the most important book in the series and this is because this book really teaches you the ins and outs of the Zone System, which in case your unaware is the photographic technique for determining optimal film exposure and development. On top of that its a pre-visualization tool that really makes you understand how a scene is translated into a photographic image. There is no better system in photography period. If you take the time to learn the zone system from top to bottom, I guarantee you will become a photographer who is in complete control of the photographic techniques required to make an amazing final print. If you want to become a master or just a great photographer, there is no better place to start than learning the zone system.

As I have said in my reviews of the other books in this series, this is not a series for a beginner and this book in particular will be extremely difficult for a beginner to stomach. While this is probably the best written technical book in all of photography, some of it can still be incredibly difficult for beginners to grasp. If your a beginner I recommend reading a beginner photography book. One that will teach you the basics. Once you have a solid foundation of the basics, then start on this series.

I wont bother going into any more detail in regards to what this book teaches. That would take too much time and it would make this review way too long. As the name of the book clearly states, this book's focus is on the negative and as I am sure your aware the neg is the shot. If you screw up the neg, chances are nothing you can do will fix the image. This book will teach you how to get that perfect neg each and every time regardless of conditions.

The bottom line - This is hands down the best 3 book series on photography ever made. If you are serious about photography and want to learn how to master shooting and printing in black and white then look no further.
BEST IN DEPTH EXPLANATION OF THE ZONE SYSTEM
I decided to buy this book after I gave a try to Ricardo Aronovich's "Exponer una historia", a book that makes a farily simple explanation of the Zone system for cinematographers. And I decided to do so because, for some reason, it's simplicity makes it really hard to understand, since it lacks a lot of the necessary math you'll need to understand the effect of light on film. Although much of the information in this volume doesn't cover digital technologies, the basic principles actually apply to any format. I'd suggest it though to serious students only.
One of the best book in teaching photography
The core of this book is probably the zone system. Before reading the book, I had heard many comments on how complicated and inpractical this system is. However, I found this system to be a extremely reliable, easily understood and an applicable system to work with. It is IMO the best system to work with. There are obviously many contents about shooting in films. Ansel passed away in 1984. I dont think you can expect him to write about digital age even if he could predict the rise of digital camera. Still, the zone system and many insights are extremely helpful even for digital photography. I am also surprised on how well the book is written with many detail samples and how the zone system can be applied to these samples. This is a must have for anyone who wants to make better exposures.
With the zone system, you will know exactly how bright/contrast your photo should turn out. You will know which part of your picture will be underexposed, which part of your picture will be overexposed even before you take the picture because you can predict which zone each individual part of the picture will fall into with just a few metering and calculation. In turn, you can control exactly how your picture should turn out, and what exposure will get you the best photo. Some people may complain that it requires too much metering. Actually, you only need to meter the most important parts (usually the brightest and the darkest part, or your favorite part) of the photo in order to make sure they appear fine in your picture. Taking a few meter will save you a lot of time from going back to PS your pictures. Ansel is a genius to come up with this system!
Master of non digital photography
If you are interested in photography and in making excellent photographs whether digital or traditional film its important to read Ansel Adams. He did the photography and the development of film and the printing and his photographs of the landscape especially known for photographing Yosemite are exquisitely perfect in black and white. In this book that is part of a series of 3 he gave us everything we need to make great photographs. Why would someone who is a digital photographer read this book? Its to understand the basics the foundation of photography. This book is The Negative and in digital photography what you get is the negative and the print together and you want to understand what you have and what you can do make that photograph or that negative in black and white photography what you want it to be what you visualized when you saw the image in real life.
The book The Negative is sometimes difficult to follow cause he was truly a Master and most of us are not so just keep reading to get whats of value to you as a reader and a photographer
This book The Negative is part of a three book series includes
The Camera
Basic Techniques of Photography that has revised edition from his student John Schaeffer
Read all these books if you are committed to excellence in your photography
JG
An excellent technical reference
Concisely written in Adams' own scholarly style, "The Negative" is a valuable resource for photographers learning the foundation of technically correct (as opposed to generally good) base exposure in a variety of scenes, both pedestrian and those that are more conflicting. One must, however, consider that more than 4 decades have passed since the techniques were founded and the technology described can be viewed, in many cases, with a quaint tug at nostalgia. Today's evaluative and matrix metering systems, programmed along the Zone System, do a remarkable job where once exposure was tedious and error prone, and this is where learning the Zone System to competently handle difficult scenes is a useful addition to a photographer's "book of tricks". But despite the clarity of explanation and steps, Adams' Zone System remains a complex, intertwining system to understand (theory) and apply (field application); it never was and never will be a five-minute task. For B&W fine art photographers, "The Negative" holds a timeless reference quality with many techniques remaining the solid benchmarks for fine art production. In summary, a tremendously good read and a most valuable addition to any learned photographer's library.

Description

Renowned as America's pre-eminent black-and-white landscape photographer, Ansel Adams began to photograph in color soon after Kodachrome film was invented in the mid 1930s. He made nearly 3,500 color photographs, a small fraction of which were published for the first time in the 1993 edition of ANSEL ADAMS IN COLOR. In this newly revised and expanded edition, 20 unpublished photographs have been added. New digital scanning and printing technologies also mean that the book now offers a more faithful representation of Adams's color photography.

Customer Reviews

More than expected
I had very little knowledge of Ansel Adams other than having seen many of his images in books, prints, etc. The book describes in pictures and text how deeply emotionally and intellectually invested Ansel was in the photography process. He saw photography as a true art, and he felt a responsiblity to be true to the viewers of his images in terms of communicating exactly what he saw and FELT when he was capturing the image. His passion for black and white was remarkable. He did not believer that color could be reproduced and delivered to consumers, whether they be serious artists or casual observers, in a way that was up to his standards for quality. He did, however, anticipate that the future of photography would change that concern, and he knew that technology was moving away from film. It is a little sad that he didn't live to see the digital technologies of today - he would probably be a major digital expert. Nice job by the author putting this together. Ansel lives on the pages.
Picture Perfect
The perfect book! I could not put it down. It gives you a look at Ansel Adams and his adventures and personal thoughts on photography.

I would sincerely recommend this book.
Wonderful color images from the master of black and white
For anyone that enjoys photography as a pasttime, this book was a wonderful source of inspiration. For those that enjoy simply looking at the work of great photographers, one doesn't need to be a professional to be able to appreciate the works contained in this product. It was very interesting to see Adams' works in color - and to see his genius in a whole different light (literally).
Ansel would be pleased
This latest issue of his colour photographs finally allows us to see them in the way Ansel Adams intended. My only gripe is I wish it was larger format.
Awesome
This has become my "I need a break" book. You know when you have read all the intense books, seen all the intense news, and you just need to get away? I can look at the photos (I love photography) and drift and/or read the commentary and imagine.

I think I love color photography the best because of hues and intensity and, maybe the reality of vision.
