Description
Closely based on Haring’s own concept for the monograph he wanted to publish before his untimely death, this volume represents more than a decade of research and contains a wealth of unpublished photographic and written material including drawings, studio photographs, and journal entries. From chalk drawings deep in the New York City subways to murals in Pisa and Berlin; collaborations with William Burroughs and the famous body painting of Grace Jones, this book follows the incredible trajectory of Keith Haring’s artistic career: how a young man from a small town in rural Pennsylvania came to revolutionize the art world—and the course of art history—within little more than a decade. An incredibly prolific artist, Keith Haring created countless bold, provocative, endearing, and unforgettable images that continue to inspire artists—and delight children—worldwide. Tracing the arc from his early subway "tags" to his poignant work on social issues as diverse as AIDS, illiteracy and apartheid, this visually stunning book is the definitive work on Keith Haring.

poor and small selection of works
I was disappointed in the works displayed. None had the classic vivacity of his famous works; they seemed to be from some limited collection that was most easily available.

A Wonderful Tribute
This large, oversized book is a wonderful tribute to Keith Haring and his artwork. Haring was a ground breaking artist who combined graffiti and street art with pop art. He also combined art in commerce in a way that had never been done with the Pop Shop, a retail store that sold merchandise featuring his artwork (think Murakami) on everything from clothing to kids toys. Must-have for Haring fans.

All For His Art....
Keith Haring was someone I would have liked to have known. I recall seeing his paintings, which at the time were almost considered graffiti, around Manhattan in the early 1980's, and, being charmed by his trademark faceless little expressions of mass humanity. He became the artist most identifiable with the 1980's. But, he was much more than that. He was always very aware of his role as an artist, and, without any conceived pretention, what that role meant in society. Some artists are very insular, and develope their art in total privacy, for later viewing. Keith Haring was an artist who wanted people "involved" in the happening of his creativity. These journals, which he began sporadically from his teens, until his death from AIDS in 1990, show someone far more serious, with a sincere social conscience, than his often whimsical style suggests. He had a huge and unquestioning admiration for children, having a connection to them which could be described as what he called a mutual joy in the "gift of life", not yet jaded or corrupted. There are excerpts here which sometimes read like a tedious travelogue, of his shows worldwide. But, they are worthy reading overall because of his observations about people, politics, and the publics reaction to what he was trying to say through his art. He hated the "business" end of the art world, but acknowledged it as a necessity, if you wanted your art to be seen. He especially viewed businessmen and politicians as inheritantly evil and corrupt, making the astute observation in 1987 that white men in particular use "religion and business as a tool to fulfill his greed and power hungry aggression..."Expansion", "colonization", "dominitation", are all filled with the abuse of power and the misuse of people." (Some things never change...) His very sensitive side can be seen in his reaction to the death of dear friend and mentor Andy Warhol. It is very moving, and pays tribute and appreciation to one of his first supporters. He believed in the good of SOME people, in a corrupt world, and in the hope of change for the better in mankind. His art was a reaching out, which he prophetically foresaw as outlasting what he always felt would be a short life. These journals are the entertaining account of the life of a very talented, very intelligent, dear man, and I feel they'd be an interesting read even if their author were anonymous. There are lessons here, and not just for art students. As he intended, his art is what remains. It has a universal appeal, it "speaks" to people everywhere, about life, war, technology, sex, in a language everyone understands. As he observed regarding his need to keep creating, even in the face of impending death... "Work is all I have, and art is more important than life."

Keith Haring: Radiant Child
I first became interested in Keith Haring as an artist when I saw a collection of his work at the Tampa Museum of Art in the very early 1990's. By that time, Keith had already passed away; however, he left behind a very large legacy of his remarkable work. I decided I had to know more about this man whose colorful pop art had caught my eye, so I went out and bought the book, "Keith Haring: The Authorized Biography." This book is awesome!! It is part autobiography, part miniature art gallery. Keith's story is told in a very intimate, revealing way, and it really makes you feel as if you are right there in the middle of his life in New York in the 80's. All of the famous artists and people from the entertainment world that comprised Keith's social circle are also included in the book, offering up their observations and anecdotes of Keith Haring, his lifestyle, and his art. There are many personal photographs of the artist at work and with his friends included in the book, as well as eye-popping photos of some of Keith's famous works. Often Keith Haring is called a "grafitti artist." When you read this book, you will realize that he is more than just that; Keith Haring was a down-to-earth man whose stunning and sometimes controversial art holds a universal appeal and a bittersweet social commentary of life as he knew it. Art lovers - don't miss out on this one!

This was the first biography that I'd read
I had always been under the impression that biographies were purposely designed to be dull and pointless, until I picked up this book. I have always liked Haring's work and wanted to find out more about the man himself. Not only is this book a biography but it contains words from Haring himself. It is very accessible, all chapters are broken down into easy to read sections and you can dip in and out of the book as you wish. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in his art (it contains many colour photographs of his more famous works) and all those who are interested in learning more about Haring's colourful life.

A fascinating and intimate portrait of an artist
What makes "Keith Haring: The Authorized Biography", such a moving work is its unique approach to the biographical format. Rather than just recount his research into Haring's life, author John Gruen has pieced together writings by Haring, the artist's friends, companions, mentors, and dealers. The narrative switches perspective quite often, resulting in a balanced and more revealing account of Haring's life and art, from different points of view. Among other things, Haring recounts his beginnings as a graffiti artist, his rivalry with the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, and his coming to terms with being gay, and eventually, his contraction of AIDS. Profusely illustrated throughout, the book also gives an inside look at several aspects of the 80's art scene in New York city. By the end, the reader gains not only a thorough knowledge of Haring the artist, but more importantly, an understanding of the humanist philosophy and intent behind the art

A Childrens' Library Must Have
We started reading to our baby when he was just a few weeks old. This was the one book that stimulated his senses right away. The bright and contrasting colors captured his attention as an infant and now as a toddler, this is still his favorite book.

Excellent--A Must Have
My daughter loves this book. She has to have it at least once a day--if not 15 times. One of the first things she would do once she could walk was carry it to me so I could read it to her. As her vocabulary has developed she asks for it by name and loves to point out the things she knows the words for. And after having read it hundreds of times, I still find the art freash and amusing. How many children's books hold up to that test?

Bold and bright, early introduction to contemporary art
This is a bright and exciting book (it's on our list for the grandparents as a "not-before-bedtime" book) with fun pictures for toddlers. Our toddler loves to look through the pictures and although she is WAY too young to think about reading, the words are also very appealing and large and attract her attention too. The drawings are bright and bold and show children of diverse skin colors (including green and blue) in outlandish clothes that are way too big for them. The underlying message is one of diversity, but it's not sappy or pushy. Keith Haring was one of the great artists of our time, and it's tremendous to have a children's book that introduces children to his art in a casual way. This is not a "let's study the art of great artists" book, it's just a children's book filled with great illustrations that happen to be by a great artist. I suspect that many of the children who are enjoying this book as toddlers or preschoolers may have one of those tremendous "ah-ha" moments five or ten years from now when they end up on a school field trip to an art gallery and think, "I KNOW that artist."

Adorable and Fun!
This book is very cute. Its size and the bright colors grab babies' attention. The pictures and writing are bright and big. Although my daughter is not yet 1, I think she'll enjoy it for a couple of years as she learns colors, articles of clothing, etc. Definitely different from typical childrens books and lots of fun.
