Ick
Reads like she wrote it for Harlequin earlier in her career. Not really believable, and heavy on the stereotypical bad-boy (but not really) -meets-rich-princess (who's really not) theme. And a thesaurus would have helped -- the use of the phrase "half-breed" was frequent enough to be annoying.

Great romance, suspence
I love intelligent romantic suspence stories. I loved this book. You can feel for Shelby, who had her world turned upside down at the age of seventeen, and Nevada, who had Shelby, the love of his life, walk away from him, not knowing what she was going through. They come together again ten years later, to solve a very personal mystery. It's the kind of story I love reading.

So-so
I've read other Lisa Jackson books and liked them, but this one was just kinda blah.
It wasn't what I would call a suspense or a romance book. It was just a story of fiction.
I'm a real bookworm and can usually finish a book within 1 1/2 days, this one took me over a week and it's only 362 pages. It just didn't hold my interest.
If you've never read a Lisa Jackson book before then I don't recommend starting with this one. If you typically like Ms. Jackson's suspense books - don't expect this one to be up to her regular standards. If you're the type of person who just has to read everything their fav author writes then go ahead and read it because it's not terrible.

Interesting story but....
I have read only a few of the Lisa Jackson books but this one looked very interesting and I actually read through the whole thing in a little more then a week without needing to put the book aside for a little bit because the characters or the plot was annoying me (ex: Whispers). So that's a good point for her right there.
The backflashes were the most interesting part of the book. They had a good pace it gave you basic fundemental information about the characters but I could tell right off the back who the ultimate killer would be. I thought she might take a twist and make the overtly bad character a red herring but no.
The one character who annoyed me the most was Zachary Danvers. He was that type of rebel without a cause. The rich white kid who lives in luxury but craves for some excitement and goes out to cause trouble becasue he's bored. If he were just a little more sadistic, he'd probably be that kid that drives around with his friends, shooting bee bees at the people they pass on the street. I couldn't help but laugh at him half the time. If he wasn't brooding over the fact that Adria looked like his stepmom (and I believe that is a major part of why he was so attracted to her. Projection is just fun like that), then he was ranting and raving at adria for looking like his stepmom. The man needed some therapy. The best part however is when they made love and are on that thin line of she could be his sister or she isn't his sister. Apparently since he crossed that line once before (even though it was just incest in the eyes of the law) then doing it with a blood relative wasn't bad enough to stop him.
I had alot of questions while reading this book: Why didn't they have DNA tests done? I know that back in 94 they did have the technology so that they could test siblings and show that they are related to each other considering it all that probably would have just made the book a few chapters long and not a very interesting read. (Though nearly 3/4 of the book was spent with the siblings arguing over whether she was their sister or not and not much being accomplished from said arguments)
Also why wasn't Ginny Watson, London's Nanny, every considered a suspect? Just becasue her bank account was left untouched? I just don't understand the logic in that. She was the last person with London, there were no signs of struggle like she was attacked with the girl. Why would a kidnapper take the girl and her? She would have just been unwanted baggage.
So many questions that really only Lisa Jackson could answer. All in all, it was an okay book. I don't regret spending my money on it and it's good for just letting your mind drift off and relax.

Kidnapped sister returns
Adria Hart has arrived in Portland at the Danvers Hotel in search of the family that she might have been kidnapped from two decades earlier. The Danvers heirs, all grown children of deceased patriarch Witt Danvers are used to long lost sisters surfacing. Witt has an unusual will - half his estate goes to London Danvers - the rest divided among his other heirs, and they will do anything to keep Adria from collecting. While the family is convinced she's a fake, ne'er do well middle son Zach is intrigued by her. She is the spiting image of his stepmother, the woman who took his virginity. On the one hand he thinks she might be his half sister, and on the other hand, he is extremely attracted to her.
Someone does not want Adria to rediscover her family and inheritance - they have gone to great lengths to scare her off, resulting in Zach bringing her out to live with him at his ranch. Several stolen kisses lead to passion in each other's arms, but they realize that until they know whether they are blood-related, they cannot continue the relationship. It is a bit "icky" for lack of a better term, and the outcome is a little too pat and convenient as if to justify the two losing their self control.
Jackson has done what few authors do - she has taken her fist novel ("Treasures") and beefed it up (from 400 to 510 pages). It is clearly packaged as a re-issue with a new name on the back cover, so if this comes as a surprise, you did not read the plot summary. But just because she added 500 pages does not mean it is necessarily better - this is one huge book and a pretty slow read at times, shifting from 1973, 1980, and 1993 to tell the drawn out story.

Good Suspense
Once I got into the book, I found it suspenseful and full of twist and turns. I couldn't tell the good guy from the bad guy. I did like the character of Nick. I think he was the only redeeming character in the book. It was a disappointment that "Marla" had such a tainted past. Her character turned out okay in the end, but when it was finally revealed about her past, I found her thoroughly unbelievable as having changed that much just by having a baby! Also, I would hardly call this book a romance novel. Very little of that truly going on except for lustful thoughts between Nick and Marla. Not much character development.

If She Only Knew
This book was great reading and it is one that will keep you up all night. Lots of suspense, quite a bit of romance that "heated" up the storyline and nearly all the characters were anything, but boring. The author did a great service to her readers by writing this book. I am hooked on her books now. One of the most interesting characters were Eugenia Cahill~~~the matriarch of the family. She had apricot colored hair, a sharp tongue and kept the household in an uproar. Then enters, Marla, her daughter-in- law who survived a traumatic car wreck and she developes an attitude in order to survive the Cahill chaos!

Absolute drivel.
I had hoped to like this book. The story had potential even if I didn't care for the writing style. By the end I couldn't stop laughing at the foolishness of the story line. This book has every cliche known to man.
If this hasn't been made into a movie for Lifetime for Women it should.

Description
Ever since her father was stabbed to death in a home invasion, Julia “Jules” Farentino has been plagued by nightmares. Her half-sister, Shaylee, now seventeen, has had her own difficulties since the tragedy, earning a rap sheet for drug use, theft, and vandalism. Still, when Jules learns of her mother’s decision to send Shay to an elite boarding school in Oregon, she’s skeptical. Blue Rock Academy has a reputation for turning wayward kids around — but one of its students went missing a few months earlier and her body has never been found. On impulse, Jules applies for a teaching job at the Academy. Shortly before Jules arrives, a student is found hanged, another near death, and a hysterical Shay believes it’s murder. Then another girl is found dead. There’s no doubt something sinister is at hand. And Jules has become the next target of a bloodthirsty killer without limits, without remorse, without mercy…

Blue Rock Academy, aka BRA
Seventeen year old Shaylee Stillman is a hellion, and a judge has laid down the law. She must enroll in a school for troubled teens, or it's jailtime. There's something about the Blue Rock Academy that doesn't sit right with her older half sister Jules, who decides to take a teaching job there as a sort of amateur investigator, just to be sure little sis will be okay. Unbenownst to Jules, her former boyfriend Cooper, the love of her life whom she just can't forget, also works there, hired by the parents of a former student who disappeared a few months back. In no time, a murderer begins to run amok and the students start dropping like flies.
Without Mercy is the sort of book in which all the women are *itches and all the men *astards, at least according to the bad guys. After her initial shock at encountering Cooper, whom she calls "Cowboy", the inevitable happens; guess who uncovers the truth about the murders, after nearly falling victim to the sociopaths themselves. Apparently the school is run and staffed by incompetents, and the local police are no use either.
In Without Mercy, the passages meant to be suspenseful fall flat, the outcome is predictable from early on, and the book is much too long. Recommended to readers who enjoy adventurous romance novels with some steamy interludes and language.

Disappointing
I have read Lisa Jackson ever since she began writing romantic suspense and eagerly await each book. She has always ranked at the top of my list of favorite authors so it was with great anticipation that I picked up a copy of "Without Mercy", only to find myself extremely disappointed. The plot was such a cliche--isolated boarding school, religious extremists, snow storm, etc.--and the characters were underdeveloped and/or unlikable. The plot was also underdeveloped and there were a lot of questions the story raised that were never answered. I didn't understand why Jules was so convinced that the school was a terrible place, other than the fact she seemed to think Shay didn't deserve punishment for the bad things she'd done. Given the choice between jail and a reform school, Jules thought Shay should come live with her...huh?...why??? I found myself agreeing with the mother and the friends and despising Jules. I also hated how all the religious people were mocked and looked down upon, even the ones who seemed to be honestly good people.
I struggled to finish the book and was relieved to find out I was at the end, even somewhat enjoying the surprise ending. But then came the last few pages, when I realized the author was setting us up for a sequel! These are definitely not characters I am interested in re-visiting.

Prepare for ranting
Without Mercy is little more than a mish mash of contrivance and cliché. I'm not sure premises get much worse than two ex-lovers both posing as teachers at a `boot-camp' style private school to investigate the disappearance of one of the students. Nevermind how a rodeo-rider come private-investigator successfully fakes being an experienced teacher - or how the two new-comers were completely looked past as suspects despite arriving around the same time as the disappearance (and later murders). The plot is so perfectly unoriginal you won't care about its weaknesses.
Not content with the cliché of two ex-lovers happening to be in the same place at the same time (SPOILER ALERT they have sex) Jackson throws in these other gleaming plot pieces: `The Leader' our peek-a-boo antagonist is a religious extremist who can't resist woman, but hates them for making him so sinful (ever heard of such a villain before? I couldn't even fit all the titles of the other novels ripped off in these parenthesises), it snows, so all the characters are trapped at the school's location without hope of rescue, the main characters find files which incriminate The Leader, despite his diabolical plans making absolutely no sense whatsoever (he's a bad guy right? They don't have to make sense)
And of course the twist. In the end we find out that the real killer was someone totally unexpected, un-foreshadowed and nonsensical. But all in the name of surprise endings right?
Wrong...

Not like the others...
Lisa Jackson books are must-reads for me and yet I truly struggled to get through this one. The plot was fast-moving and complicated enough to keep the reader interested, but the characters just didn't make sense to me at all. It isn't a good sign when you find yourself agreeing with the evil mother in book instead of your heroine! Likewise, it was clear why I was supposed to find the hero attractive but I had no idea why our heroine was in love with him other than...she just never got over him? Why??? This book was okay to kill time but didn't keep me interested enough to pay all that much attention. I would definitely rather go back and read some of her other novels.

Unbearable Heroine
While the book is well-written and keeps you guessing, I couldn't give this one any more stars because the character of Nikki was so unlikeable that it was impossible to care about her or do anything other than hope she'd be buried alive. Reed wasn't much better, but at least he was tolerable when he was with Morrisette.
LJ has written better...don't feel bad skipping this one.

A strong writer who pulls you into the story
This book, received second hand in a box from a Freecycle member, was my introduction to Lisa Jackson. I love stumbling authors I've never read, especially if we hit it off, their books and me.
I found this novel highly readable. The friction between fellow reporters, coupled with the animosity between law enforcement and members of the press, is a natural here. Her characters are real, as is the dialog.
The premise of a serial killer burying his victims alive, buddied up with corpses, is chilling. I felt terrible for the victims, hoped for their rescues. Jackson has a flair for the macabre, but her writing surpasses that of the average thriller. I did figure out who The Survivor was, but not until late in the story; she did a good job of building up a couple of strong suspects.
I'll be finding more of her books!
