It didn't feel like fiction.....
In her 60s, my great-grandmother wrote a book about her life as a settler in Alberta, Canada, at the turn of the 20th century. This novel, though Janette Oke is a much better writer than my great-grandmother, had the same feel of that book. It's a gentle story of two people who come together out of necessity and learn to love each other--and form a family. There's not a lot of melodrama--instead there are things that really happened during the settlement of the prairies. The characters seemed real to me, so much so that I wondered if this was a fictionalization of Ms. Oke's family history. I'm so glad I took advantage of the fact that Amazon was offering a free download; I'll be seeking out the rest of the series.

nicely done coming of age adventure historical romance
Very historical in its presentation and symetrical in its characterization of the people and the land, this novel is aptly expressed in the Christian fiction section. Easy to read for the correct level, it is both entertaining , calming and thrilling as the story unfolds... Aster Waiting

Please - spare me from any sequels.
This book was honestly, truly terrible.
I admit that my dislike for it might be my own fault - I blindly downloaded it when it was offered as a free Kindle download without reading any descriptions or reviews, but this is the first time that habit has ever come back to bite me so hard.
I think the book might have been better if it had been a little longer - the chapters were a combination of jarring, illogical "bad" events interrupting a dry litany of "Old West" chores and Christian values. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more had I not constantly stopped after every chapter and said to myself, "Wait- WHY did the barn burn down? WHY did Laura die? WHY harp on the token lazy Mr Larson and his family?" The scattered negative points seemed merely to be a point of God challenging the unshakable faith of the Christian characters who - never fear - never waver in their beliefs, regardless the depth of their losses.
The characters lacked personality (except Missie, who was very endearing) and the plot made little to no sense. Every page was smothered in "good Christian values" - to the point where the characters were more angelic than human. The dialect was mildly annoying in the beginning but was the most minor of the issues with this novel. The one area in which Janette Oke excelled was detailed descriptions of day-to-day household chores, which - by the way - were just as boring in the 1800s as they are now.
I would not recommend this book to people who like Historical Fiction.
I would not recommend this book to people who like Romance novels.
I would not recommend this book to people who like Christian novels.
And there's only a slight chance that I would recommend this book to people who like all three.

Beautiful story
I now have this complete set of books. I read this book in one day it was beautiful and smooth reading. Janette Oke is amazing and the saga keeps going in the "Prairie Legacy" series. If you purchase the "Love comes Softly" series then you really need to buy the "Prairie legacy" ones as well. You will be blessed and amazed as you you follow the Davis family story.

Beautiful love story
I spent an entire day and evening watching the series, Love Comes Softy, on the Hallmark Channel a few weeks ago. I knew immediately that I had to read these books. There are times when I crave nothing more than a simple story about people, their hardships, their faith, and the love that they share. This book has all of that and more. I truly admire our ancestors that lived during the early 1800s and who were brave enough to venture into the unexplored west. After turning the last page, my appreciation for those that came before me increased tenfold and my heart was enveloped within the pages of Matty and Clark Davis' love story.

Good, but not my favorite
Despite the fact that anyone who has read the Love Comes Softly series is anxious for continuation of Clark and Marty's lives, this was not my favorite book. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it and I think that anyone who loves these characters will enjoy it. It's just that after you write a certain number of books about the same people, the originality starts to fade. I noticed that in Gibert Morris' House of Winslow series. The first books are excellent, but not the very end ones. I liked this book, but it just doesn't quite compare with the original series.

Light easy read
Another great story in the Love Comes Softly series. I listened to this book on tape.
This book's time line moved a lot more quickly than the first book, which was a bit confusing at first but actually made the story move along quite nicely. Marty and Clark have established their relationship and are now raising their own family. Along the way there are more babies in the Davis family as well as in the neighborhood. The Davis' also take in two more neighbor girls who's pa left town.
The story is light and moves along well. The movie is good as well and goes into more details about some parts, but leaves out others, as most movies do :)

Good adult, Christian historical fiction....
Any young adult / teenager struggling with his/her "first love" should read this one. The only drawback to the book that I struggled with was my attempt to place a definite time-period to the storyline. The main character in this Oke novel is Virginia Simpson. In Chapter 8, one of Virginia's younger brothers, Danny, had a summer job with a local farmer, and Danny's days were spent driving a team of horses, first planting and then haying. Yet, telephones, cars, and elevators were mentioned throughout the novel.

Janette Oke
I have read many Janette Oke books over the last 4 years. I find that though they have interesting plots and characters the writing doesn't seem to bring the full potential out of the story. My own personal taste leans towards very real to life stories. I don't always find that in Janet Oke's books. I find that they are too warm and fuzzy for me. If you like those kind of stories or just want a book you don't really have to concentrate on I would recommend Janet Oke. If not I would suggest someone like Torey Hayden or Francine Rivers.

Not her best
After reading the Love Comes Softly Series and the Prairie Legacy, I couldn't wait to read another series by Ms. Oke. I was excited to get Seasons of the Heart in one volume. I just couldn't get into this volume though. I tried several times and just could not finish it. I have actually had the book for several years now, probably around five. Maybe one of these days. I even loaned it to a friend and she couldn't get into it either. Obviously, lots of folks do like it. So don't let me discourage anyone from reading it.

This was a good series from Janette Oke. It isn't one of her best, but I still really enjoyed reading it. I would recommend it to anyone who is already a Janette Oke fan. For new readers I would suggest starting with her other series such as Love Comes Softly or the Canadian West series.

One of my favorites growing up.
Originally my mom introduced me to this series because she thought I would enjoy it because it was from a guys perspective. Well she was right. I cant even count how many times I read through each of the books. I could always imagine being right there with him as he told his story. Eventually I was given this book collecting all four novels and again read through it over and over again. This being the only Janette Oke series I have read I cant really base it off of the other ones. But for me it was a great way to spend a rainy day or just any other time I felt like picking up a book.

Description
Christine is recovering from a broken heart and finds solace in helping her adored brother Henry settle into married life. The "call of the North" tugs at her, making one young man’s interest in her doubly attractive--but also filling her with uncertainty. Is Christine willing to give up her dreams of living in the North and let God help her choose a lifelong love?
As Canadian men volunteer for World War II in Janette Oke's When Tomorrow Comes, Christine Delaney recovers from her broken heart and finds solace in helping her adored brother Henry settle into married life with the widowed Amber and her young son Danny. However, the Delaney family's happiness is shattered when a terrible auto accident mars an anticipated family celebration. At this crucial turning point in her spiritual maturity, Christine must decide if she is willing to give up her dreams of living in the North, and let God help her choose between her suitors to find a lifelong love. It's classic Oke here from cover to cover. Christian readers will appreciate that no matter what the circumstances, God is praised and everything works out for the best, even when things look grim. The writing is loose in spots-- characters "flush" repeatedly, and the dialogue is often stiff. Oke devotees will likely see these as minor glitches in a light, romantic novel that's penned in the tradition they've come to expect and enjoy. Readers who loved Beyond the Gathering Storm in Oke's "Canadian West" series will be more than content with this sweet sequel about the Delaney family. --Cindy Crosby

When Tomorrow Comes
This book was merely ok for me. It starts right when Beyond the Gathering Storm lets off and continues the story of Christine. This time, Christine is the main character with no switching of point of view to her brother Henry. Her parents, Elizabeth and Wynn, feature slightly but are again, not the main characters.
We find Christine living with her parents after the breakup of her relationship in the South where she subsequently loses her job as well. She is just about to look for another job when she gets the good news that her brother and his beloved Amber will be getting married at Christmas and would love if she would come early to help with things. This she agrees to readily.
She and her mother first stop at Calgary to visit family and obtain some supplies, like fabric for a new suit for her position as bride's maid. While her mother stays in Calgary, she continues on to her brother's place.
After the wedding, it is Christine's job to look after Danny, Amber's son. It is during this time that a certain young Mountie that we know from Beyond the Gathering Storm (one that was mauled by a bear actually) takes a special interest in her. While he is not pushy, Christine just isn't sure she is ready for a relationship yet. She leaves with him saying if she ever changes her mind, all she needs to do is send him a note.
She stops briefly back home before going back to Edmonton to pursue a job. Here she finds one and is just hired when she gets the bad news that her Aunt in Calgary has fallen and hurt her back and needs a nursemaid. Knowing that it would be probably for the best, she goes to take care of her Aunt, abandoning the job she just had.
The care of her Aunt goes well and soon she finds herself in a job in Calgary, thanks to her Uncle who was able to suggest it to her. With such happiness going on, they decide all family should come for Easter. When all but her brother Henry is there, they get bad news that he and his family have been in an accident. While they wait at the hospital visiting and looking after Henry and his family, she meets a young doctor who later turns out to have romantic pursuits.
In addition to the doctor, a young priest also has been pursuing her and knows her from the volunteer work that she is doing for soldiers. However will she decide where her heart leads?
There wasn't as much Christian emphasis in this book as there were in the rest of Oke's in my opinion. The only time she really brought it in was towards the end when Christine was seeking guidance towards making a decision. The way she did it, to me, was really strange. It involved Christine conversing with different quotes from the bible and while I realize people do this, it just seemed awkward to me. I think it was perhaps the way Oke wrote it rather than the situation actually being awkward.
Another disappointment in this book for me, and the reason I only rated it three stars, was because I did not agree with the ending at all. While there were three guys to pick and choose from, she didn't choose the one I would have chosen for her. Oke had all possible logic leading to a certain one and then out of nowhere switches it up. It made it less of an enjoyable read for me.
At least in this book, compared to the last, the characters were more believable. They weren't always perfect and were more fallible. This made it easier for me to connect with them.
As always, Oke's writing is inoffensive and while she deals with some tough things, she doesn't go too far with them or get too descriptive in gory details.
Overall, while I would have liked to see a better ending to the Canadian West series this wasn't terrible. It just isn't the end I would have chosen for it.

5 out of 6 ain't bad
I've been a huge fan of Janette oke since I was a young teen, and have continued to enjoy her books for the past decade. I must say though, that this was the first time ive ever been dissapointed by her. I read the first book in this series (When calls the Heart) when i was 14 or so and it was my favorite book for years. The next 5 in the series were all entertaining and just the right amount of romantic while providing a beautiful message of God's love and guidance. This book was just a mess. I found Christine's character to be painfully flat and uninteresting. Her reactions to the men who were interested in her were almost irritatingly self-centered. I know the end of the book where she spends a week "searching for God's guidance" was supposed to make up for it all, but I think it fell a little short. The way the book starts by setting up the romance between Christine and Laray and then just dropping it suddenly to start another romance with Eric makes it all feel unhinged. I guess it might have worked if the relationship had been at least romantic, but Christine is unsure of her feelings the whole time so it's really hard to understand where it's going. Anyway, I guess it's hard to write an amazing story EVERY single time...so 5 good books out of 6 ain't bad..

Some nice twists, not much else
I'll admit, I'm not a huge Oke fan, but she's decent. The characters were just all right in Beyond the Gathering Storm and When Tomorrow Comes...the plot twists are almost the only redeeming pt, though they do well in that role. Flat characters are all well and good but besides the few nice plot twists, I just got the "nothing is happening" feeling.
Overall, if you're an Oke fan, go for it. If not, start with her Prairie Legacy series or something...it's much better.
