Good adult, Christian historical fiction....
Any young adult / teenager struggling with his/her "first love" should read this one. The only drawback to the book that I struggled with was my attempt to place a definite time-period to the storyline. The main character in this Oke novel is Virginia Simpson. In Chapter 8, one of Virginia's younger brothers, Danny, had a summer job with a local farmer, and Danny's days were spent driving a team of horses, first planting and then haying. Yet, telephones, cars, and elevators were mentioned throughout the novel.

Janette Oke
I have read many Janette Oke books over the last 4 years. I find that though they have interesting plots and characters the writing doesn't seem to bring the full potential out of the story. My own personal taste leans towards very real to life stories. I don't always find that in Janet Oke's books. I find that they are too warm and fuzzy for me. If you like those kind of stories or just want a book you don't really have to concentrate on I would recommend Janet Oke. If not I would suggest someone like Torey Hayden or Francine Rivers.

Description
A Tender Story of Faith and Love From Janette Oke Countless fans of Christian fiction like you were thrilled when Janette Oke released her new series, A PRAIRIE LEGACY. Readers have been rewarded with a touching exploration of the feelings and thoughts of young Virginia Simpson as she grows to be a woman. With A Quiet Strength, bestselling author Janette Oke continues Virginia's tale with a heartwarming, romantic novel that mothers and daughters everywhere will love. Virginia Simpson has learned that grandma Marty was right to insist that when God allows something to be taken from you, he replaces it with something better. The return of Jonathan, their renewed courtship, and the upcoming wedding are all shining examples of that. Still though, the trials and disappointments of Virginia's life weigh heavily on her and the inner strength that has continued to build in her is far from completion. The first test of her new resolve comes soon after her marriage. Waiting for their house to be completed, the couple has no choice but to live with Jonathan's grandmother. Although Virginia loves the woman, she struggles with having to share her new husband's time. When the house is completed, even greater obstacles arise, challenging both the couple's fledgling love as well as Virginia's inner peace. But like gold refined, Virginia will emerge as a woman of character and godliness.

Marriage, Grandmother, Horses and Mindy
Virginia is so anxious to be married to Jonathan that she does not fully count the cost. When reality hits her, she is angry and disallusioned. Her home is finally built and just as life looks promising, an old friend drops in and with her a little waif daughter who ends up being Virginia and Jonathan's. Raising horses is risky and not without long hours - again leaving Virginia to fret. With a baby on the way and an wounded child to heal, horses take priority and Virginia loses her perspective on what is really important. The last straw is when Grandmother breaks her leg and must come live with them. Virginia is ready to throw in the towel when she allows God to speak to her heart and she finally listens. She is able to sort between fact and fantasy, romance and committment and wakes to the real reason for being a family. She is changed forever. Another Janette Oke thriller. Off to book 4!

WOW!
I loved the first two books, but this one is the best yet! Virgina has now grown up. At first I was sad that her teen-years adventures were over, but reading about her as an adult has been thrilling. So many things, including an abused child, her own children, a husband, struggles, and her grandmother, happen to her. Through the whole thing she realizes that her relationship with Christ is not what it should be. I think that this book has a great value to it!

Wonderful!
Just like the previous reader, I couldn't put the book down! It was such a wonderful story I only wished that I had read the first two novels! I'm a first time reader to author Jannette Oke and I'm happy that found her! It was wonderfully written and very warming to the heart. I was glad to see Virginia's strength renewed during her toughest times. May God continue to bless Mrs. Oke.

They just keep getting better and better..
I read the first two stories in this series and loved both of them. The plight of young Virginia in the first, and the older Virginia in the second gave us a glimpes into the life of a girl in that time period, I'd say, around the turn of the century. This third book introduces us to an adult Virginia, a married woman, caring for an elderly grandmother and an abused child as well as her husband, her own child, and household chores. Life for her was not easy, but she had God by her side, and He is the only one who can give you the stregnth and endurance to make it through the tough times. This book was really inspiring, and I hope Ms. Oke takes pity on us and writes the next one soon.

Description
Her Character Has Been Shaped and Tempered by Both Adversity and Triumph... If Virginia could have chosen to accept or discard all the changes that came her way, she gladly would have let most of them pass right by herself and her family. She loved her life--living on the farm with her beloved Jonathan and their children, not far from her parents and her grandparents. But a change that is tearing at her heart is the gradual but steady physical decline in Grandma Marty and Grandpa Clark. She cannot imagine their familiar farm home without their welcoming smiles and their words of wisdom that arise from of decades of life experiences and a solid faith in God. And their lovely daughter Mindy, who has blessed their home ever since her mother left the tiny child with them, has been encouraged and guided to pray for that mother all these years. Was God answering that prayer, or was the worst nightmare any family could face now upon them?
Virginia is completely overwhelmed with the circumstances in her life. Losses loom on the horizon: elderly grandparents who can no longer stay on the family farm; her nephew Slate, who longs to leave for a home of his own; her brother Danny and his wife, who leave for Kenya; and Mindy, whom Virginia has raised as her own daughter but who may be torn away from the ones she loves by a cold-hearted birth mother. "That's how life is," Virginia tells Mindy. "Things just keep being... different." Virginia has always dreaded and fought change. Now, can she embrace it? In this fourth volume of the Prairie Legacy series, bestselling author Janette Oke gently opens a window into the life of a close-knit family trying to find its way through bewildering times. In her own quiet-paced, inimitable style, she examines the role that change plays in our lives and how we are shaped--or broken--by it. Longtime fans of this inspirational author will find no big shocks or surprises here. Just vintage Oke. --Cindy Crosby

Second Best Book of all the Prairie West & Love Comes Softly books!
This book was by far one of my favorites. The only book with the Davis family I like better than this one would have to be Love Comes Softly, strictly because it lays the base for the next 3 generations. I really enjoyed it, but was sad to see ' a certain character ' die. I was also disappointed that we didn't get to meet one of the members of one of the families ( couldn't say which one, it would ruin the book, just skip to the last page if you're curious.. )
Over all, I give this book a *****/***** review!

When faced with very distressing issues....
Any reader will find some good in this remarkable, thought-provoking book. However, all readers who have faced the heart-rending issues in dealing with aging parents / grandparents should read this novel. Also, every reader who has experienced the anxiety, trials & tribulations in a child custody case should carefully peruse the pages of this novel. This is definitely a 5-star book!

Full circle
I fell in love with Clark and Marty in the traggic but sweet Love Comes Softly movie, so I had to order the series, eight books in all. The plot thickened with each child born to Marty and Clark. I connected with Marty the wife, Marty the mother, and Marty the grandmother. Then when Belinda [Marty's baby girl] gave her inheritance away and went back home without one thing to assist her aging Mom and Dad, I was appauled. I just finished Like Refined Gold, the last novel in the saga of Marty and Clark's family, The Prairie Legacy, starring Virginia, their granddaughter, Belinda's daughter. I love the rock solid faith portrayed in this inspirational fiction and how true to life Janette Oke portrays the hearts of wives, daughters, and grandmothers. You don't want to miss Marty's granddaughter, Virginia, Belinda's daughter, and her search for Mr. Right, and the toughest battle of "true motherhood". I treasure all twelve of these novels.

Realism meets fantasy
I was so excited when I saw this 5th book added to her Canadian West series! The children really go through a lot. It was suspenseful waiting for things to happen sometimes, but isn't that real life? :-) Janette Oke has produced yet another wonderful story that I couldn't put down until the end. Even then, her characters are so well written that it left me wondering if she would write one more for this series!

Good book, but
To begin with, this is a good book if you enjoy reading fiction. It was wonderful to be reunited with old characters, and I liked how this book was slightly different from many of Janette Oke's other books in time period and style. Reading this book without the intent of being critical, this was a good book, and a must read for anyone who values Janette Oke's books. However, to be perfectly fair and honest in my review, this book does have its flaws. I felt as though I grew somewhat attached to Christine and Henry, but this book lacked some of the necessary material and substance that causes the reader to truly bond with the characters. Furthermore, as much as I would love to say I enjoyed every aspect of this book, I was disappointed with Christine for her refusal to see sooner that Boyd wouldn't change. Christine seemed to be a smart, bright girl, but why did the matter of Boyd's attitude seem to be slightly glossed over? There was just something missing to make this a great book. Finally, the book ended very abruptly, in my opinion. Perhaps a sequal is in the making, but if not, Christine's story seemed to vanish near the end, leaving me feeling that her future, or even present, was unsolved. Then with Henry and Sam, I felt totally lost in the abruptness of the ending. Sure, I know what happened with them, but what about the void that gets them to where they are? Despite my opinions (which provoked me to lower my rating to 3 stars), I still would recommend "Beyone the Gathering Storm" just because it was fun to read.

Janette Oke Spans Generation Gap!
Janette Oke has a way of reaching through scripture from one generation to the next without being preachy. As I read this book, I found encouragement in my own problems through scripture and example.
What a way she has of connecting the reader to the people in her stories. "Love's Long Journey" is easy to read and yet not juvenile. Moral issues and love shine through every page. The decision making process includes the results of that decision according to promises of the Word! A great book to escape to and come out better able to face life!
This book was a little peculiar to me in the location. She seemed to put the Canadian climate into the Texas prairie. It would have been super, super, super, had she learned more about Texas climate!

The Adult Little House Moves
I read 3 books by Janette Oke over the last 2 weeks. They are really easy, escape literature. If you liked Little House On the Prairie when you were growing up these are the adult versions. I discovered them via the movies. I really like to read the book before I see the movie and when I saw an advertisement about these movies I felt I should read the books. I have enjoyed them quite a bit. The chapters are short so I can get one in on breaks between my work around the house.
Love's Long Journey has Missie going west with her husband to the untamed prairie. Will she ever get over her homesickness? Will they make it on the wagon train? Will the ranch prosper? This one is every bit as exciting as the 1st one.
These are Christian Literature. One of the things I enjoyed the most about them is that they really seem to reflect how hard life was then. The work was endless and the tools were hard to come by. These people really did have to do for themselves and make do the best they could.

Love's Long Journey
I tried to read this book three times and gave up after a few chapters. Then I decided I was going to read it from cover to cover, and I was delighted to find that the book picks up momentum as it goes along. It's like the first few chapters your'e pushing uphill, and all of a sudden you arive at the top and . . . WHEEEEE!!!!!!! A wholesome, well written novel about a young couple starting a new life together in the West. Realistic - not a fairy tale - but a joy to read. If I had a complaint, it would be the polarization between the Christians and the non religious charactors. Missy is always feeling sorry for the lost people and thinking about how cold and hard their hearts are, and how they have problems. I am a Christian, and I feel it is important to share my faith with others, but it should be remembered that all people are created in a unique and special way - believers and unbelievers. There are very few people who are so sick they are just one lump of pain and problems. Also, I thought it was slightly annoying how Missy constantly sympathized with the trivial difficulties of her neighbors on the wagon train when she had just as bad or worse problems herself. Seems a bit like a saviour complex, to me. Having thus said, I enjoyed this book and would highly reccomend it to fans of Inspirational and historical fiction.
