Description

Austar IV isn't the planet it once was, and when Jakkin and Akki finally return to the dragon nursery, their homecoming arouses mixed emotions. Together they've survived the insurmountable, and now they can weather the brutal conditions of Dark After and communicate with the dragons they love. But with this knowledge comes responsibility. What they've learned about survival could transform the planet--or, if entrusted to the wrong hands, bring about its destruction. Akki's insistence that she return to the Rokk to finish her training and begin new experiments drives a chasm between her and Jakkin. Suddenly she finds herself in the midst of a political battle that could claim her life. Only Jakkin can save her. If only he could reach her. . . .

Return to the Pit!
I quite liked my return to the Pit Dragon Chronicles in this most recent addition to Yolen's series. I didn't reread the other books before I picked this one up, and didn't find it difficult to remember where I'd left off, even though it had been several years since I read the third in the series.

Jakkin and Akki return from their exile in the mountains completely changed and they find that the world they left behind has changed in their absence as well. They decide to hide their new telepathic abilities gained by sheltering in the egg chamber of Heart's Blood after her death to save themselves from the searing cold of Dark After. But hiding such powers aren't as easy as they hoped. And there are still dark forces at work on Austar and Jakkin and Akki are once again caught up into the heart of them.
Dragon's Heart by Jane Yolen **WARNING some spoilers**
Great book. It picks up right where the third left off. the writting was good, though at times seemed a bit rushed.(as if Jane needed to finish writting a chapter/the last half of the book)The first half was the right pace and was building up to something big/good. But the second part was rushed. The ending was ok,and again seemed too rushed. More could have been done with the "kidnappers" It was ended in away that there "may" not be a another one.(which would be sad, because there is still alot that can be done)The added info about Austar after the book was a nice touch and did bring a smile to my face. And within that alone, there can be another book. I found these books as a young teenager, even though i'm in my late 20's, i still read the seris and was super happy to see a fourth. I hope for more books in the seris. More about Jakkin and Akki growing up and starting their own family and help Austar with the change. Or the trogs upraising and attacking a weak, changing Austar that hows little to no weapons. Or side storys about Golden's "pirating" missions to help Austar. And if Jane or anyone that knows her(which i doubt she or anyone that knows here even reads Amazon reviews ). Please write more books for the seris. And please, take your time with the story. This seris has lots of promise. We the fan, are behind you on them and await more. Keep up the good work. Fans of the seris, read and enjoy!
Finally!
If you have read the other 3 Pit Dragon Chronicles then this book is a must. I found the other 3 books to be an incomplete story without this book. This book doesn't clean up all the loose ends but does it a great job of investigating how the radical societal changes effect the characters.

Most beautifully illustrated childrens book I've seen to date
The first thing that struck me when I browsed through this book was not the story but the illustrations. In fact, I didn't even get half way through the story as I stood there in the bookstore before I decided that it really didn't matter to me how the story ended, I simply could not NOT have this book with its fantastic artwork on my daughter's bookshelf. Even if my daughter doesn't enjoy the book, I knew I wanted this work of art on my own bookshelf. While I love the story, I do find the story's text to be a bit choppy and dry, but perhaps my impression comes from the text's inability to live up to the lush and immersive artwork by Daniela Terrazzini. I highly recommend this book and I will definitely be looking for anything else Ms. Terrazzini publishes.
"The Seeing Stick" Sees New Life
Originally published in 1977, //The Seeing Stick// is a beautifully written and gloriously illustrated tale of a blind girl who learns to see the world, not through her eyes, but through the intricate carvings on a seeing stick. Re-introduced with new illustrations, the book features renderings by artist Daniela Jaglenka Terrazzini, who complements what the blind girl experiences by illustrating the story in shades of gray. When a wise, old man shares his seeing stick of detailed carvings depicting his world around him, the pages burst into color.

Award-winning author Jane Yolen sings the story with almost musical language that is still fresh and rich today. "Her fingers, like little breezes,"" Feel the lines in the old man's face...from years of worry and years of joy." Attentive to every detail, Yolen named the girl Hwei Ming, which translates into "the lightless moon on the last day of the month" and "becoming luminous." A rich tale pleasant for the eyes, ears and heart.

I'm a Jane Yolen fan. Most of her books are tangible for classroom use.
Her level of storytelling is always in-depth and allows children to explore so many possibilities. I read this story about 25 years ago and it is still as vibrant to me now as it was when I first discovered it while taking a Childrens' Literature course.
Amazing Story and Illustrations!
This is a must have for any child's collection of books. A classic tale that both entertains and teaches both with its words and illustrations. Probably most suited for kids who are first grade or older, but enjoyed by all ages. Highly recommended.
This is a fairytale like no other!

in loving memory of our little boy
This is a beautiful story of a loving, childless couple who lives by the sea. There was nothing in the world that they wanted more than a child. The husband is a fisherman and finds a "greyling" that turns into a child, and brings him home for his wife.
This book touched my heart, and could have been written for me. My husband and I were a childless couple who lived near the sea (bay) and also wanted a child more than anything else in the world. After years of waiting, we were overjoyed to be expecting. We lost our little boy before he was born, and had this book donated to the local elementary school library in his honor.
Great Book!!
I think Jane Yolen told this story very well. I am a college student and did her for an Author Presentation and I was so shocked to see that the seal became a little boy. The Illustrations were absolutely fantastic. Kudos!!

Cute "How to Clean Up" Book for Dinosaur Lovers
How does a dinosaur clean up his room? "Does he stick all his teddy bears under his bed, or shove them all into his closet instead?" Maybe my kids do, but not these tidy little dinosaurs! Told in charming rhyme, How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms first shows kids what not to do, and then shows them what they should do to clean up properly.

As with the rest of the "How Do Dinosaurs..." series, the illustrations are terrific. The names of the dinosaurs are included on every page, for those budding scientists who wish to know what they are called. The antics of these lovable reptiles will keep children giggling and wanting to read it again, and again, and again...

My children ages five and eight really like this book. I like it too because it's a fun way to teach kids how to clean up. It's a great addition to any child's library. I highly recommend it.
This Mom loves everything the dinosaurs do!
I am so happy with all the dinosaur books, my kids think they are funny and I give huge praise to anything that will get my kids to do tasks they might otherwise hate doing. A little side note the book "How do dinosaurs eat their food" actually got my daughter to eat BROCOLLI!! Come on how great is that?!?!
Wonderful for helping kids learn how to tidy up!
I love all the books in this series and this one is no exception. Great illustration and teaches a valuable life lesson.
My little dinosaur now cleans her room
This book was a total break through. Our 2 year old now wants to clean her room. And while she does it, she ROARS!!! like a dinosaur. It is the bestest most cutest little thing in the whole wide world.
Darling book...
great way to teach your little one about doing chores without complaining...cute pictures of "ferocious" dinosaurs.

Gorgeous photos!
I have my elementary age students write color poems every year. I will use this book to inspire them. The photographs are beautiful and include synonyms for each color. The poems range from fairly long, to short haikus. There are also quotes to go along with each color - many from Mother Goose. I enjoy Jane Yolen's writings and this did not disappoint.
Poems about Colors for teachers
I really like this book of poems. The pictures are lovely. Some poems have just a few lines and some poems are longer. The second language students and native English speaking students enjoy these poems.
A Poetic and Photographic Feast
Yolen and Stemple have created a visual feast in their, "Color Me A Rhyme." As usual, Jane Yolen's poetry is excellent, but what sold me on the book were the amazing photographic layouts of natural images in green, grey, orange, purple....Each two page spread in the book has a Jane Yolen poem about the featured color, other names for the color (for white: chalk, snow, alabaster and bone), a literary quote about the color, and at least two lovely juxtaposed photos. You have to see the book to really appreciate its gorgeous layouts. This book would be excellent in the early grades, where teaching concepts is emphasized, or when teaching creative writing. Kids could all write their own color poems. I also think young artists would enjoy the varieties of color represented in the volume. How many kids know the varieties of blue? Some of its names are lovely and mysterious--cerulean, sapphire, azure and turquoise. Let them experience these colors in this fine book.
